Wigton Town Council consists of fifteen members, all local people living within three miles of the town’s boundary. It employs a Town Clerk, an assistant Town Clerk along with a  team of groundsmen.

It is responsible for running and maintaining a number of functions, including; Wigton Park, Barton Laws Playing Fields, Throstle Park,  three children’s play areas (situated on residential housing estates), allotments and St. Mary’s Churchyard.

It is also responsible for Woodland at Speet Gill and the Millennium Walk, the seating areas on the Water Street car park, bus shelters and public seats on various sites within the parish.

The council operate and maintain the public toilets in the centre of town.

It is also responsible, in partnership with the adjoining Woodside and Waverton Parishes, for the operation of Wigton cemetery.

The Full Town Council meets monthly and incorporates four committees; Staffing, Policy & Development committee, Events committee,  Finance committee, and Parks, Open Spaces & Allotments committee.

The Town Council also appoints representatives to 13 local groups and organisations.

The Town Council employs six permanent employees and has one vacancy.

Town Council Office

Town Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer employed on a full time permanent basis. Salary is in line with the National Joint Council Local Government Pay Scale LC3 (Spinal Column Points 33-41).

Assistant Clerk employed on a part time (20 hours per week) permanent basis.  Salary is in line with the National Joint Council Local Government Pay Scale LC2 (Spinal Column Points 24-28).

The Clerk/RFOs are the Council’s principal executives and advisers, & act in an independent role, taking instruction from the Council as a body whole; the Clerk/RFOs are not answerable to any individual councillor. As the Council’s ‘Proper Officers’, the Clerk/RFOs are responsible for implementing Council policy; ensuring that the Council acts within the law; & advising the Council on all aspects of its work, including financial, governance, ethical and procedural matters.

Parks Team

Grounds Supervisor employed on a full time permanent basis. Salary is in line with the National Joint Council Local Government Pay Scale LC1 (Spinal Column Points 13-17).

Grounds Maintenance Operative employed on a full time permanent basis. Salary is in line with the National Joint Council Local Government Pay Scale LC1 (Spinal Column Points 5-12).

Apprentice employed on a full time basis, salary in line with the National Apprenticeship Framework.
