Throstle Park

Throstle Park was created by Wigton Town Council in December 2021 with help from Environment Fund from Cumbria County Council. Formerly a field with grazing sheep, this is now a much loved recreation area for the people of Wigton.

A 500m-long path was built around the site making it accessible in all weathers to walkers, prams and wheelchairs. A 30m long wildlife pond was dug in the wettest area of the field, and this has helped to mitigate the annual flooding that formerly blighted the area.

Throstle Park is also home to the putting green run by two of our local councillors, Cllr. Mike Armstrong and Cllr. Sandra Hodson. It is accessed from the cycle path and includes wonderful handmade representations of Wigton landmarks. It is open to the public during weekends in summertime and is great fun.

  In early 2022, volunteers from local group, Wildlife for Wigton, planted over 1000 native trees along the border of the park. A copper beech tree was planted at the highest point inthe park to mark the Platinum Jubile of HM Queen Elizabeth II. ANother is in Phoenix park nearby.

In Spring 2022 local volunteers planted wildflower plugs and seeds as part of the Get Cumbria Buzzing campaign to attract polinators to the park.

Wordsworth Trust Grasmere also donated a willow structure, which is found at the far end of the park. Placed in a really quiet spot, it’s perfect for birwatching along the Wiza Beck that borders the space.
